A Guide to Asymmetric Living

Not too long ago Andrew Tuohy from Vuurwapen Blog posted a video titled I am not a “sheepdog”

This echoed many sentiments that I have had for a long time. The moniker “sheepdog” as ‘one who loyally obeys the shepherd and protects the sheep’ did not sit well with me. The term sheepdog has always bothered me. I will fight for myself and my loved ones. I’m not here to protect everyone.

I carry a firearm and a knife at all times, and I know how to use them. I know and stay equipped for multiple levels of first aid and trauma care. I maintain my vehicle to maximum and have it equipped and outfitted for escape and evade driving. When I shoot my rifle, I wear armor and maintain cover.

Shooting with DRFT

This week the AllAK47 crew was able to meet up with Matt DeVito from Downrange Firearms Training and throw some lead.

Live from the shop

My friend Andre at Notes for Robots was at the shop recently and decided to take some pictures. They turned out pretty fantastic. It’s a nice (if contrived) peek at my day job.

Chicks dig SCARs

This Saturday we had the opportunity to spend a little time with a friend’s new Fabrique Nationale SCAR 17S—the civilian-legal version of the SCAR-H—in 7.62×51 NATO. On days like that, it pays to be the only one of your friends with a shooting range in your back yard. We had a few hours to try it out, enough time to form a very positive opinion.

Rifle Drills!

Had an amazing time running drills with my brother Adam today. Did some advancement with (poorly)simulated cover.
Hey, you use what you got!

The 7.62×39 is our .30-30

So I was reading the 66th edition Gun Digest 2012 the other day (always fun to do, it’s practically a phone book full of gun articles) and I ran across a review of the I.O. 100% American made AK-47 written by Jim Dickson. While the IO is a great rifle, what caught my eye was the statement “[AK-47’s] boast power comparable to that of the vaunted .30-30 Winchester in a gun with 30 shots as fast as you can pull the trigger” and “Anything you can use a .30-30 on you can use an AK-47 on. That makes it far more useful and versatile than guns in 5.56 caliber for the 5.56 will always be a varmint cartridge and not a deer rifle cartridge.”
